The six yearlings that we are consigning to the Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale (formerly known as the St Leger Sale) are now well into their preparation. Their pedigrees are now on the Forthcoming Sales page and photographs will be available two weeks prior to the sale.
Bloodsweatandtears, a graduate from last year's Doncaster consignment, broke his maiden at Yarmouth yesterday for William Knight. He won despite resenting the fast ground. His trainer has always held him in high regard and hopes that he will progress to better things when racing on a softer surface.
We also received a timely update yesterday for the Green Desert ex Depressed Colt that we will be consigning to Book 1 of the Tattersalls October sale. His two year old half sister Overwhelm won her maiden impressively. She has now won and been placed twice from just four starts to date.
Friday 18th June 2010
Yesterday was a day of mixed emotions as we had our first Royal Ascot winner but also lost our dear friend and avid supporter Rosie Lomax who died aged 81 peacefully in her sleep.
Rosie was a unique character and a pioneering lady jockey and trainer. One of her finest achievements was winning the Ascot Gold Cup with Precipice Wood in 1970.
Ransom Note, raised and consigned by Hillwood, was an impressive winner of the Brittania Handicap for Barry Hills. He was sold to Anthony Bromley of Highflyer Bloodstock for 30,000 Guineas at The Tattersalls October Sale in 2008.
Sunday 16th May 2010
The foaling season and Breeze Up sales have now been completed. Our last foal was born on 9 May when Miss Meltemi had a strong bay colt by Exceed and Excel. He is a three quarters brother to the Stakes Performers Ada River and Don't Dili Dali as well as the progressive three year old Balducci. The mare is being rested this year.
Prior to that Charlecote had a bay filly by Dubawi on 3 May and has been covered again by the same stallion. Barry Taylor's Makara, dam of Listed winner Fourpenny Lane, had a chesnut Dutch Art filly on 10 April and has been covered by Bahamian Bounty.
The Breeze Up sales were a very selective trade this year and we had a mixed set of results. The highlight was a filly by Consolidator ex Gender Dance who made 160,000 Guineas in the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale when sold to Dwayne Woods on behalf of Andrew Tinkler.
Wednesday 7th April 2010
Due to the inclement weather we have not been able to take photographs of the Craven Breeze Up horses until this week. They are now avaiable to be viewed on the Forthcoming Sales Page. If you require any further details on our draft please do not hesitate to contact either Charlie or Tracy.
It has been a quieter time in the foaling unit but Fascination Street had a sharp, racy filly by Kyllachy on 29 March. She is due to be covered by Authorized.
Hillwood graduates have got off to a good start in the Flat seaason and Sole Power (Kyllachy ex Demerger) was an impressive winner of a competitive Conditions Race at Dundalk last weekend. Demerger has a yearling filly by Dutch Art who will go to the Tattersalls October Sale. She has just returned from Ireland where she was covered by, and is in foal to, Mastercraftsman.
Saturday 13th March 2010
We had mixed fortunes at the Kempton Breeze Up Sale yesterday. The Observatory ex Dimakaya filly sold for £18,000 to Blandford Bloodstock and is going into training with Richard Hannon for a syndicate fronted by Sir Eric Parker.
The Refuse To Bend ex Red Fox colt did not sell for £6,000. However, Anne and George Duffield were impressed enough by him to take him home 'on spec' and find an owner for him. By common consent he was one of the most imposing physicals in the sale. However, his sire is very 'cold' commercially at the moment despite a number of winners and in a selective trade this was his undoing despite a perfectly respectable Breeze.
Following a busy period of foaling we are delighted that our first four mares to have been covered have all scanned in foal. Ada River is in foal to Cape Cross as previously reported and Demerger has been scanned in foal to Coolmore first season sire Mastercraftsman. Spunger is in foal to Bahamian Bounty and Come Away With Me tested positive to Royal Applause yesterday.
Thursday 11th March 2010
It has been a busy week in the foaling unit with five new arrivals in the last seven days.
Last Wednesday Chris and Debbie Buckley's Windmill had a strong and attractive filly by Teofilo. She is due to be covered by Azamour. The Buckley's had a further pair of fillies when Hampton Lucy produced a Verglas on Tuesday and Strictly Cool a Refuse To Bend foal on Wednesday. Hampton Lucy will be covered by Kheleyf and Strictly Cool visits Yeats.
Barry Taylor's wonderful servant Rohita had a very attractive colt by Medicean last Friday. This is her last foal as she has now been retired. Her legacy will continue though as her three year old daughter, Tafawut, won her maiden impressively at Kempton last week for Clive Cox who hopes that she will go on to better things during the season. She is owned by Barry and will retire to Hillwood as a broodmare at the end of the year.
Finally, Penny Van Straubenzee's Eclaircie had a big, good looking colt by Royal Applause last night. She will be covered by Dubawi.
Tuesday 2nd March 2010
We had our fourth foal of the season when American Rouge had a strong and correct filly by Sleeping Indian last night.
Our first mare has been scanned in foal. Ada River, a winning and multiple stakes placed Maiden Mare by Dansili, has been scanned in foal to Cape Cross, sire of the incomparable Sea The Stars.
The photographs of the Kempton Breeze Up horses are now available to be viewed on the Forthcoming Sales Page. The Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up catalogue is online at www.tattersalls.com and our consignment will be on the Forthcoming Sales page shortly.
Friday 19th February 2010
We have had two new colt foals this week, both belonging to Hillwood Thoroughbred Breeding Ltd.
Jardin foaled a rangy, good limbed son of Manduro on monday and Flora Burn had a well grown colt by Sleeping Indian this morning. Jardin is due to be covered by Danehill Dancer and Flora Burn returns to Sleeping Indian.
The Goffs at Kempton Breeze Up Sale is now only three weeks away. We have a consignment of three for this sale and two for the Doncaster Breeze Up. These pedigrees can now be viewed on the Forthcoming Sales page and their photographs will be available two weeks prior to the Sale. We are also consigning at the two Tattersalls Breeze Up Sales with six due to go to the Craven Sale and another six entered in the Guineas Sale.
Thursday 28th January 2010
We welcomed our first foal of 2010 when Barry and Janet Marsden's SPUNGER had an attractive and correct bay filly by DUTCH ART last thursday. SPUNGER is due to be covered by BAHAMIAN BOUNTY.
We have fourteen mares to foal this year and a further five Maiden or Barren mares to cover. Along with fifteen two year olds to prepare for the Breeze Up Sales it promises to be a busy spring.
Our website will be undergoing several updates and new features over the coming months so we hope that you will appreciate the improvements but please bear with us while the changes are being made.
Saturday 6th June 2009
Two stakes winners in the last seven days have continued the impressive run of our current crop of three year olds.
Danehill Destiny was an easy winner of the Listed Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock last weekend. Having been bought as a foal for 62,000 Guineas she was reared and consigned by Hillwood and made 120,000 Guineas at the Tattersalls October Sale Book 1. Ocean's Minstrel followed up his earlier Listed success and creditable performance in the 2,000 Guineas with a good front running victory in the Listed Surrey Stakes at Epsom on Oaks day. Another graduate of the Tattersalls October Sale he is now being aimed at the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Our final foal of the year was a colt by Exceed and Excel out of Barry Taylor's mare Kalindi. Born on 11 May he is an attractive, racy individual who is a half brother to the Group winning Abigail Pett. Kalindi is being rested this year.
The Sales companies have all inspected this year's yearlings and we are in the process of determining which sale they are offered at. We expect to consign around forty yearlings in total this autumn.
Monday 20th April 2009
It has been a busy few months with the Breeding season in full swing, the Breeze Up Sales and Hillwood graduates already performing with distinction on the track.
Stuart McPhee's Aptina foaled a bay colt by Aussie Rules on 2 March and is back in foal to Sleeping Indian. We then had a lull before welcoming three arrivals in the space of a few days. Hillwood Thoroughbred Breeding's Fascination Street had a racy bay filly by Pivotal on 6 April. She is a three parts sister to the Champion race mare Golden Apples. Fascination Street visits Pivotal's son Kyllachy. On 8 April Chris and Debbie Buckley's Exultate Jubilate foaled a bay filly by Excellent Art and Geoff Russell's Miss Meltemi had a bay colt by Nayef. Exultate Jubilate is being rested this year while Miss Meltemi will be covered by Exceed and Excel.
The Breeze Up sales have gone well for Hillwood with the highlights being the sales of the Street Cry ex Clever Dorothy filly and Danehill Dancer ex Kimbajar colt at last week's Tattersalls Craven Sale. The filly made 100,000 Guineas having been bought in Keeneland for the equivalent of £40,000 and the colt made 120,000 Guineas having been bought in as a yearling for £70,000. We are consigning at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale and the draft can be viewed on the Forthcoming Sales Page.
Our current crop of three year olds have produced three stakes winners already this year. April Pride, a graduate of the Kempton Breeze Up, won a Listed race at Santa Anita in California while both Nashmiah and Minstrel's Dance, both Tattersalls October yearlings, are the winners of Listed races at Lingfield. They are being aimed at the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas respectively.
Wednesday 18th February 2009
The Breeding Season is now in full swing and we have had another three foals in the first two weeks of February as well as our first couple of mares covered.
On 3 February Christina Dunlop's American Rouge had a fine, big strong colt by Avonbridge. The Group 1 winning sprinter Avonbridge has his first two year old runners this year and the reports on their progress so far have been promising. On 9 February Hillwood Thoroughbred Breeding's Jardin produced a very correct and striking Colt by Medicean. This is Jardin's second foal, she has a yearling filly by Selkirk, and the half sister to Sleeping Indian is due to visit Manduro. The last of the three colts born so far this month was Chris and Debbie Buckley's son of Sir Percy out of Windmill who foaled on Valentine's Night, 14 February. He is a well grown, correct individual and the mare is due to visit Teofilo.
Flora Burn has been covered by Sleeping Indian and Spunger has visited Dutch Art. With several more covers due in the forthcoming week it is an anxious wait to see whether the mares are in foal when scanned at 16 days.
Friday 23rd January 2009
We had our first foal of the season when Spunger had a bay filly by Kyllachy yesterday morning.
Barry and Janet Marden's mare was a three time winner for Ralph Beckett and subsequently Harry Dunlop. She is a half sister to the highly promising Mafaaz. Mafaaz, a son of Medicean, won his maiden first time out before finishing a close fifth to subsequent Breeder's Cup Juvenile winner Donatavium in the Tattersalls Timeform Million on his only other start last year. Spunger visits Dutch Art, a son of Medicean, this year.
